Owner/Manager: Irena Coz-Lucas
Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, it was inevitable that Irena become involved in the horse industry. She grew up there and in France with horses all around her. She began by riding and competing in the world of Three Day Eventing both in the United States and in France, but, her proximity to the capital of Thoroughbred breeding in Lexington soon attracted her focus. In 1989 she started her business providing mare care for some of the many Thoroughbred broodmares in and around Fayette County. By 1992, she had migrated to Southern California and channeled her focus to only one of the Three Day Eventing phases, namely the Dressage phase. In that same year she purchased her first Warmblood, a mare by the name of Hobby. In 1994 she bred Hobby for the first time and launched the genesis for Kastel Coz Sport Horses. From 1996 through 2004 she has successfully shown Hobby and her offspring, as well as offspring or relatives to other mares she has acquired and bred throughout those years. Most notably in both 2002 and 2003 she won numerous Dressage highpoint awards and year end awards at various levels on Fiesta (Art Deco x Hobby), Marahoote (out of Sterling Venture- Hobby’s dam), Meeko (Art Deco x Facet), Prince of Prussia (ATA stallion, sire of Violet & Zena) and Yoyo Mae (Bandit’s Lucky Doc x Hobby). In May of 2004 Irena’s father was diagnosed with a terminal illness and there ensued a series of events that led to a five year hiatus. Despite the time off from breeding, riding, and showing, Irena remained busy developing her skills within the field of equine reproduction using fresh cooled and frozen semen. Additionally, she added a fully appointed repro-lab and breeding shed to her 11+ acre ranch in Ramona, CA. After an exciting first breeding season back, breeding to a couple of Hilltop Farm, Inc.’s stallions in 2009, the farm has been very busy in the years since having full breeding rosters and a sales barn full of homebreds and off the track thoroughbreds. In 2017, 23 years of breeding culminated with Kastel Coz Sport Horses being awarded its 2nd and 3rd Star Awards by ISR/Oldenburg N.A. . Having produced a myriad of Premium foals, no fewer than 10 High Point Champions, several Premium mares, and multiple notable performance horses, KCSH has joined the Elite rank of 3 Star ISR/Oldenburg N.A. Breeder, one of 15 Nationally and the only active California *** breeder!
